James Naylor Is Running Melbourne to Sydney. He Starts June 25.
On June 25, James Naylor leaves Melbourne on foot. The destination is Sydney. The distance is roughly 1,000 km.
James has been training with MARA since January, building the aerobic base and day-on-day running resilience this scale demands. He came in with a history of stress fractures and no running base at the start of the year. Three ultras and two marathons under his belt, but only two years of running. Getting him to the start line healthy was the first objective. That work is done.
He is not doing this solo in the unsupported sense. A full crew travels with him: crew chief, physio, nutrition lead, and videographer, operating out of a self-contained motorhome. Every stage is planned, every checkpoint is scripted, every decision that can be made in advance has been made. On the run, James makes as few decisions as possible. The crew manages the operation. James runs the kilometres.
The target is 10 days. Daily distances ramp from 80 km early to 100 km and beyond as the run settles. The contingency plan sits at 12 days. The fuelling strategy is built around Tailwind. Recovery each day includes sauna, hyperbaric, and red light therapy. None of this is guesswork. Every system has been designed and tested in the lead-up.
Transcontinental running and ultra marathon training demand the same things. Sustained movement under fatigue, across consecutive days, with a body that can absorb load and come back the next morning. That capacity does not come from simply running long. It comes from building an aerobic base efficient enough to let you work hard without destroying the engine. We have spent five months on that foundation.
MARA has been here before. Athletes I have coached have run transcontinental and multi-day routes across Australia. The athletes, the distances, the formats have all been different. The approach has been the same each time: build the body correctly, prepare the crew, plan the operation, and trust the system on the day.
James has done that work. Now he goes.
We will be posting updates here as he makes his way north. If you are preparing for something like this, an ultra, an adventure run, or a military selection, and want a program built around what you are actually attempting, enquire about Premium Coaching or a Custom Program.
